ESPN.com reports that Major League Baseball is altering the way they present their yearly Major League Baseball Delivery Man Award (given annual to the best relief pitcher in all of baseball, since 2005), creating an award for both the American and National leagues.

More importantly, the American League award will now be called the Mariano Rivera American League Reliever of the Year Award. Meanwhile, the National League edition will be named in honor of Trevor Hoffman.

This is not to be confused with the Rolaids Relief Man Award, which was a statistical award given to a reliever in each league, beginning in 1976. Back in July, Curt Schilling pitched the idea of the Rolaids Relief Man Award being renamed in honor of Rivera.

It is amazing to consider the passage of time. In 2004, the Yankees began their season in Tokyo, playing two games at the end of March against the (then) Devil Rays. Rivera pitched in the second game, but didn't collect a save as the Yankees won by 11 runs. Before the Yankees would continue that series on April 6, we launched on April 4.

It was year 10 of Mariano Rivera's career. Coming into that season, he was less than half way to his career saves mark of 652. He had pitched in 512 games with a 2.49 ERA, collecting 283 saves. In the 20 seasons that this site was online - the remainder of his career - he pitched in 603 games with a 1.92 ERA and 369 saves.
