08/14: Rivera blows first save since April 20 but gets win!

Posted by: David
Mariano Rivera blew his first save since April 20th vs. the Boston Red Sox. He had converted 19 consecutive save opportunities prior to Monday night vs. the Orioles. Melvin Mora led off with a broken bat flare to right center. Ramon Hernandez hit a swinging bunt which Posada fielded and got him at first for the first out. Tike Redman blooped a single to center but Melky Cabrera threw out Mora at the plate to get the second out. Brian Roberts followed with a bloop single in front of Abreu in right. His throw was on time but high and Redman slid under the tag to tie the score.

In the bottom of the ninth, with one out, Cabrera was hit with a pitch and Jason Giambi pinch hit a single down the line in right chasing Melky to third. Derek Jeter then hit a slow grounded just past Chad Bradford. Bradford got a glove on it, slowing it down even more. Roberts fielded the ball but his throw to home was way late and Cabrera scored the winning run.

Rivera is now 3-3 on the season with 19 saves in 22 save opportunities. His season ERA now stands at 3.00.
